What 71-year-old record did Max Verstappen break at Brazilian GP?

Numerous remarks have been made by the F1 experts about Max Verstappen, and nearly all of them are favorable. Certainly, the Dutch sensation has left a lasting impression on the global audience, establishing Red Bull as a formidable presence in the industry.

Most recently, at the Interlagos Circuit in the Brazilian Grand Prix, Verstappen shattered numerous records, securing his 17th win and marking the 71st victory of his entire career, once again captivating the audience.

Verstappen shatters Ferrari’s long-standing record with dominant win

Verstappen secured his 17th victory in 2023 at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, elevating his current winning ratio to 85%. By securing victory in 17 out of 22 races scheduled for this season, Verstappen guaranteed that he would have won a minimum of 77.2% of the Grand Prix this year, breaking the previous record of 75% established in 1952.

The Ferrari driver, Albert Ascari, had originally claimed the record for a 75% percentage win by winning six out of eight races in 1952.

However, it’s not as if we haven’t seen eras of supremacy in Formula 1 throughout the 71 years between Ascari and Verstappen’s achievements. In every season marked by legendary drivers such as Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton, Jim Clark and Sebastian Vettel, they have been unable to pass the ace of the industry, Ascari.

As Verstappen shattered Ascari’s record in Sao Paulo, he was simultaneously surpassing his own. In 2022, Verstappen secured victory in 15 Grand Prix races, exceeding the records of 13 wins set by Michael Schumacher in 2004 and Sebastian Vettel in 2013.
