“What a joke”: Kylian Mbappe surpasses Lionel Messi in controversial ranking, drawing ire of fans

Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe are two of the top football players in the world despite coming from different generations. While Messi is a 35-year-old former Barcelona star with his prime behind him, Kylian Mbappe is a 24-year-old World Cup winner, considered the best talent to come out of France since Zinedine Zidane.

While Messi lifted the World Cup trophy last year as a 35-year-old, Mbappe lifted football’s most coveted trophy at 19 and came close to winning his second World Cup trophy at 24 when France played Argentina in the final in Qatar last December. In the final, Mbappe scored thrice, but his efforts were not enough as Messi-inspired Argentina won on penalties.

Kylian Mbappe has been making the headlines for the wrong reasons in recent times, while Messi continues to be the face of American soccer.

Lionel Messi finishes behind Kylian Mbappe in “7 wonders of sports.”

If there is anything about football or sports generally, most topics are subjective, and people tend to discuss certain issues with sentiments due to their likeness to certain athletes. There’s a reason the Ronaldo-Messi debate remains one of the most talked about sports debates, and anytime it pops up, there are always divided opinions.

Messi and Mbappe are in the spotlight as American presenter Colin Cowherd recently made a list of his 7 wonders of the sports world, featuring Lionel Messi, LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Patrick Mahomes, and many more. In the video, Cowherd named Mbappe as the number one wonder of sport, highlighting the 24-year-old’s World Cup achievements and his recent rejection of a move to the Saudi Pro League to become the highest-paid sportsperson in the world.

The Washington-born presenter called Mbappe “the greatest young soccer talent of all time.” Lionel Messi was placed fifth on the list, four spots behind Kylian Mbappe and two behind LeBron James.

Fans slam sports analyst for absurd assessment

Not everyone was pleased with Colin Cowherd’s list of the 7 wonders of the sports world. On his list, Kylian Mbappe ranked higher than the likes of LeBron James, Novak Djokovic, Steph Curry, and Lionel Messi, something fans are not happy about. Many believe his list to be totally sentimental, something you can forgive him for.

“What a joke,” a Twitter user said. While his list may have been met with fans’ disapproval, it is important to note that it is purely his opinion and not fact-based. The sub-headline of the video read, “Colin reveals his 7 wonders of the sports world,” which means the list is purely his opinion.

Do you agree with Colin Cowherd’s list?
