Deshaun Watson joined the Cleveland Browns last season with a repertoire of athletic gifts. Though he was unable to provide the squad with a winning streak in his first season, the Browns got going the new season with a bang against the Cincinnati Bengals, inspiring Watson to throw a wild celebration.
However, the quarterback’s euphoria lasted only one game, as they faced defeat against the Pittsburgh Steelers by four points in their second game. The ominous night came as double trouble for Watson as his conduct during the game prompted a substantial punishment for him.
Deshaun Watson faces a hefty fine for unsportsmanlike conduct
Deshaun Watson was assessed three separate $35,513 fines by the NFL for his unpopular role in the game on Monday night. The two plays in which Brown’s player received a warning throughout the game resulted in the two unnecessary roughness fines against him.
Initially, after grabbing Kwon Alexander’s facemask, Deshaun Watson was reprimanded for being overly harsh. Barry Anderson, the umpire, stepped in to diffuse their heated argument as it led to led to loud protest from the Steelers bench.
During the third quarter of the game on Monday, Watson committed himself to needless roughness once more, pushing Anderson, earning him two fines totaling $10,927.
However, the roughness against the umpire was projected not to be a serious one after the NFL issued a statement regarding his conduct with Anderson.
“Officials are called upon to maintain order on the field, and sometimes while performing those duties, there is inadvertent contact between players and officials. In this instance, in their judgment, the contact did not rise to the level of a foul.”
The third fine of Desahun Watson was related to unsportsmanlike conduct, featuring a gun-themed celebration of his and teammate David Njoku in the third quarter after Cleveland scored a touchdown. For this action, both Browns players had to swallow a whopping $13,659 in compensation.
