What does indefinite suspension mean in NBA?

Recently, Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green can’t seem to catch a break. The basketball star was suspended indefinitely after he took a swing at Suns player Jusuf Nurkic in the face. He had just returned from a suspension a few weeks back after the Rudy Gobert incident.

Green’s actions constituted a serious breach of the league’s policies, warranting a deserved punishment. The announcement of the indefinite suspension came from NBA Vice President Joe Dumars, who later justified the specific action taken against the Warriors’ star.

What does indefinite suspension mean in NBA?

Indefinite Suspension is a commonly used punishment in the NBA against players who commit mistakes that require serious reprimanding. These are generally issued when a player violates a serious rule or policy of the league.

The main key difference between an indefinite suspension and a regular suspension is the time of suspension. While a regular suspension has a fixed amount of days that the player has to serve as suspension time, the indefinite suspension does not have any function or predetermined time like that.

The only way to return to the court and continue playing is to comply with a set of conditions or requirements set by the league. In the example of Draymond Green, he faced a regular suspension earlier in the season for putting Wolves player Rudy Gobert in a chokehold after a brawl broke out between the Wolves and the Dubs.

He had to serve a suspension time of five games. However, this time the circumstances are different and the NBA has issued an indefinite suspension against Green for hitting Nurkic and the only way for Green to come back is to comply with the league requirements.

Joe Dumars explains real reason behind Draymond Green’s suspension

The two-time NBA champion and the acting vice president of the NBA, Joe Dumars was responsible for handling the case of the Warriors’ star Draymond Green. He broke the sad news of an indefinite suspension of Green to the world and explained the reason for taking this action.

Dumars explained the reason the league went for an indefinite suspension instead of a regular one like last time. Dumars said, “A lot of times people tend to get caught into numbers and we didn’t wanna do that. What we wanted to do, first of all, we knew that there would be some level of punishment and we didn’t want that to be the focus.”

He further added, “We wanted the main focus to be on ‘How we can help Draymond Green and we saw indefinite was the best way to do that… Indefinite means get yourself right, we want to see you at your best, and the best way to do that is to get yourself mentally and emotionally back where you need to be and that’s how we decided on indefinite.”

What do you think of the indefinite suspension Draymond Green received? Do you think Green needs to take some time off? We are eager to know your opinions, so drop them in the comments and let us know.
