Lionel Messi, the Argentinian superstar, has netted countless goals throughout his illustrious trophy-laden career, achieving numerous glories and titles. At 36, he continues his tradition of clinching accolades in 2023. Remarkably, his World Cup jersey is the most valuable ever sold.
Messi’s impactful career, which encompasses his mesmerizing skills, numerous awards, goals, and iconic celebration of ‘pointing toward the sky’ is acclaimed globally. However, the touching story behind it remains unknown to many.
Lionel Messi iconic “pointing toward the sky” goal celebration explained
Ever since making his senior team debut for Barcelona and La Albiceleste almost twenty years ago, Messi has maintained a unique goal celebration. Whenever he finds the back of the net, he celebrates by raising his hands and pointing toward the sky, making a heartfelt gesture while looking up.
The reason behind the globally renowned celebration is a special one. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner once revealed that his post-goal celebration is a tribute to his beloved grandmother, who passed away before he claimed the title of one of the greatest players of all time.
A few years ago, Messi revealed, ‘I am doing this because I dedicate my goals to my grandmother. She took me to football, but now she can’t see how far I have come. Nevertheless, she continues to help me and my family.’
An autobiography based on the Barcelona icon titled ‘Messi: The Inside Story of the Boy Who Became a Legend,’ authored by Luca Caioli, reveals that it was his grandmother who introduced him to football. Despite facing challenges due to his small stature, his grandmother’s support paved the way for little Messi to take his first steps.

Moreover, Lionel Messi’s heroics led the Inter Miami side to clinch their maiden title, dominating year-ending awards again thanks to Messi. Yet, his American endeavors extend beyond goals and trophies.
The Argentine magician seized the spotlight with a series of Marvel Superhero celebrations during the club’s home fixtures at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Messi showcased various Marvel-based celebrations, including Thor recalling his hammer ‘Mjolnir,’ the Black Panther’s ‘Wakanda Forever’ cross-arm gesture, and Spider-Man’s web-shooting pose.
When asked about the unique celebrations, Messi explained, “My three kids are still on vacation and haven’t started school yet, so every night we watch superhero movies.”
“They came up with the idea and told me that whenever I have a game and score a goal, I do a superhero celebration. But I only do them for home games, when the kids are here, near me so that we can share those moments,” he added to his explanation.
