The Washington Commanders witnessed a lackluster season last year. They have been longing for a franchise quarterback since the days of Robert Griffin III.
Meanwhile, Griffin has become a reputed sports commentator in the NFL world. From backing up Dak Prescott to lauding Coach Prime, RG3 remains connected to the football world. The veteran quarterback recently reflected on his nearly decade-long NFL career, revealing his biggest regret.
Robert Griffin III reveals biggest regret in NFL career
Robert Griffin III enjoyed initial success, particularly during his standout rookie season with the Commanders. But he expressed remorse over his decision to return to play in 2013 after sustaining a knee injury.
“The biggest regret of my career was playing in 2013. After my injury in the playoffs against the Seahawks, I was All in for Week 1 because I wanted to be out there with my teammates. Every player when given the option to fight or flight chooses to fight. It’s what we do. But in life you have to learn from your mistakes, acknowledge them and help others not make the same ones. Hindsight is 20/20 and I should have been All in for my Career and chose to fight another day,” Griffin said.
The signal-caller’s rookie campaign in 2012 was nothing short of spectacular. He showcased his dynamic athleticism and quarterbacking skills, earning him the prestigious NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award. However, his promising trajectory took a detour when he suffered a knee injury during the team’s Wild Card loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
Unfortunately, the veteran’s determination to play through the pain led to further setbacks. During a game against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 14 of the 2013 season, he suffered another injury scare when he was hit directly on his right knee.
The decision to prioritize short-term gains over his long-term well-being ultimately took its toll. Griffin re-injured his knee during the team’s wild card loss to the Seahawks, necessitating surgery to repair both his LCL and ACL.
The aftermath of his injuries marked a challenging period in Griffin’s career. Subsequent seasons saw him grappling with injuries and fluctuating roles within the team. His struggle culminated in his departure from the Commanders organization in 2016.
Looking at Robert Griffin’s NFL career
Robert Griffin III burst onto the NFL scene after getting selected as the second overall pick by the Commanders in the 2012 NFL Draft. He set records in his rookie season with a remarkable passer rating of 102.4 and an impressive touchdown to interception ratio of 4:1. His stellar performance earned him a spot in the 2013 Pro Bowl.
However, injuries plagued RG3’s career, hindering his ability to replicate his rookie success. The following seasons saw mixed results for him and the Commanders, with a disappointing 2014 campaign marked by a 2–5 record as a starter and the team finishing last in the NFC East.
The veteran moved on to the Cleveland Browns, signing a two-year contract in March 2016. Despite flashes of his athletic brilliance, his stint with the Browns was marred by inconsistency and injuries before getting released in March 2017.
Robert Griffin III found a new home with the Baltimore Ravens in April 2018. He served primarily as a backup quarterback to provide veteran leadership and valuable depth to the team.
However, injuries continued to hamper his availability, eventually leading to his placement on injured reserve in December 2020 and subsequent release by the Ravens in January 2021. Now, he graces the football world with sports commentary.
