What prompted Scott Armstrong to transition from being referee to WWE producer?

Scott Armstrong, Bob Armstrong’s son, has created a name for himself in the wrestling business, wearing multiple hats throughout his career. He started his wrestling journey in Smoky Mountain Wrestling before transitioning to WWE in 2006, where he took on various roles including referee and producer.

At the moment, Armstrong is working for DCW in a fresh role as an Executive Producer. It’s a rare path for a referee to become a backstage producer, but he recently revealed what forced him to this unusual transition.

Does Levesque forced Scott Armstrong to transitioning from refereeing to producing?

After quitting as a wrestler, Armstrong joined WWE as a full-time judge in 2006. He later moved up and became a backstage producer until he was released in 2022. His officiating duties included fights with superstars like Randy Orton, Daniel Bryan, CM Punk, and The Undertaker, as well as WrestleMania 25’s main event.

Scott was released briefly in 2010, but he came back in 2011 and officiated infamous fights like CM Punk vs. John Cena at Money in the Bank 2011. When Armstrong was done being a referee, he started working as a producer in addition to his other professional duties. He recently talked about how he went from refereeing to producing.

He contacted Triple H, WWE’s chief creative officer, to express his desire to move into production, and that job became a reality after two years. According to Wrestling Inc, Scott noted about the discussion, “I’d gone to Hunter [WWE’s CCO Paul “Triple H” Levesque] probably two years before they actually made me a producer.”

While giving him the new role, Triple H eventually came up to Armstrong and extended an offer to work as a producer. His retirement from the referee role on television was staged by WWE when he fast-counted Daniel Bryan’s WWE Championship win at Night of Champions in 2013.

Then he spent six to seven years as a backstage producer and he shared the experience by noting, “It was so fun and such a cool way to transition, for me to go behind the scenes…And then I was [a] producer for probably, gosh, six, seven years. I had a good little run all the way to COVID. COVID took me out of the picture.”

Many wrestling fans today know him from his time as a referee and producer, but he began his career as a well-known wrestler. His early years were spent in Georgia, where he found success in the world of professional wrestling with organizations like NWA and CGW.

Scott Armstrong won titles in Georgia Championship Wrestling and the NWA

Joseph Scott James aka Scott Armstrong, kicked off his wrestling journey with WCW in 1994, embarking on a seven-year adventure that lasted until 2001. Georgia and Alabama served as his main battlegrounds when he and brother Steve formed “The James Boys” in the WCW. But before his time in WCW, Scott had some success in Georgia Championship Wrestling’s tag team division.

Scott also wrestled with his legendary father, Bob Armstrong, when he was younger. As a team, they won the prestigious NWA National Tag Team Championship, which is sought after by many other tag teams in the organization.

Scott’s dominance in wrestling extended beyond a particular region. Before his success in GCW, he left an impression on the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) by winning the NWA Junior Heavyweight Championship twice.

Oh, hi, this is Md Robin Ahmed, a WWE fan and I everyday go through a slew of popular WWE stories on Sportszion. Watching Big Show's Showstopper was the beginning of my passion for WWE, though I have to say that his Chokeslam is not one of my favorite moves. Over time, my love for professional wrestling has intensified, mostly due to the Shield, and my all-time favorite wrestler in WWE is Big Dog. I would give everything to be able to be within a few feet of him to witness his iconic Superman Punch and Spear. My major is engineering, but I'm most happy when I'm doing something artistic that doesn't put me under any pressure. Watching them wrestle and discuss their matches is always fun for me. And I've finally discovered a career that gives me fun since it allows me to with my dream heroes lifestyle. So, Welcome! I'd love to hear from you on LinkedIn and Facebook.
