Newcastle were headed to the semi-finals of the League Cup after Callum Wilson put them ahead with an early goal in the 16th minute of the game. However, a mistake from captain Kieran Trippier allowed Mykalo Mudryk to score the equalizer, which forced the game into penalties.
Mudryk’s goal sent Stamford Bridge into a frenzy, and a fan took it a step further by celebrating the goal in front of Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. The fan almost shoved Dubravka, who quickly tried to push the fan away before he ran back to the stands, leaving the goalkeeper bemused.
Both Pochettino and Eddie Howe condemned this unfortunate incident, as the latter called for more security protocols to be put in place to protect players and match officials.
“I have always said that the safety of players, coaches, managers, referees, and linesmen is the priority in any football match, so more has to be done to keep irate supporters away from the pitch,” the Newcastle manager said.
Pochettino also said a few words about the incident in his post-match interview. “We need to be careful. The fans need to be careful with this type of thing because it’s a thing that can put the players in danger. I’m disappointed. I disagree with this thing happening here in Stamford Bridge,” the Chelsea manager expressed.

While the kind of punishment the fan could face is unclear, the punishment ranges from a stadium ban to a hefty fine, judging from the punishments handed out for other similar incidents.
The match, which was almost uneventful until very late in the game, sprung to life after Mudryk scored a late leveler. Apart from gifting Chelsea their equalizer, Kieran Trippier also lost his spot-kick, as Chelsea won the penalty shootout 4-2 to lift the spirit of Enzo Fernandez, who was spotted in tears after being subbed off in the 31st minute of the game due to injury.
