The German giants Bayern Munich’s decade-long dominance in the Bundesliga is under significant threat, as they could potentially fail to defend their championship this season to Xabi Alonso’s promising Leverkusen side. Successive defeats in the league, along with a Champions League upset, have put manager Thomas Tuchel under fire.
Despite the poor results, the club has denied any possibility of sacking the German boss at this point in the season. Regardless, the club recently reached an agreement with their manager to part ways at the end of the season. The former Chelsea manager is now linked with a return to London.
Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel to leave after the season
Thomas Tuchel arrived at the Allianz Arena to replace Julian Nagelsmann in March last year, signing a contract until June 2025. He guided the Bavarians to lift their 33rd Bundesliga title in the 2022/23 season and began the current season in the best way possible. However, they lost track in the second half of the campaign.
The reigning champions are second in the league table, with a total of 50 points from the 22 games they have played so far this season. Meanwhile, the challengers, Bayer Leverkusen, managed by former Bayern Munich and Liverpool icon Xabi Alonso, are at the top of the table with an 8-point advantage.
With just 12 matches left, Tuchel’s men are under pressure to catch up to their rivals, against whom they recently suffered an upsetting 3-0 defeat. Following this, they faced a narrow 1-0 loss to Lazio in Italy during the Champions League knockouts, further piling up pressure on their German manager.
Upon their return to Germany, a third away loss—a 3-2 defeat to mid-table Bochum—ensured that the former PSG boss would not be continuing with the Bavarians next season. Following speculation about his departure, both the club and Tuchel decided to part ways by mutual agreement, concluding his term 12 months before its scheduled expiration.
Potential team for Thomas Tuchel’s future managerial position
Since it’s official that Thomas Tuchel will leave the Allianz Arena at the end of the current season, marking an early wrap-up of his second stint in his homeland, the Bundesliga outfit from Munich is already exploring potential candidates for his replacement. Meanwhile, Tuchel is tipped for a return to the Premier League.
The 56-year-old manager is linked with a reunion with his former side, Chelsea, whom he led to a UEFA Champions League title win in 2021 and was last in charge of before moving back to Germany. Reportedly, he is among the favorites to replace Mauricio Pochettino at Stamford Bridge. Additionally, Tottenham Hotspur has also emerged as a potential destination for him.
