Romelu Lukaku has been somewhat of a journeyman in his club career, facing challenges in securing a permanent spot due to several disappointing spells in the English Premier League with Chelsea and Manchester United. A similar scenario unfolded when he moved back to England to rejoin Chelsea in 2021.
After spending two successful seasons with Inter Milan and lifting the Scudetto, Lukaku is embroiled in another controversial transfer saga. He expressed his desire to move to Juventus, upsetting Inter fans. Eventually, he returned to Stamford Bridge but circumstances forced him to return to Serie A to join AS Roma.
When does Romelu Lukaku’s Roma contract expire?
Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku returned to Italy last summer, signing a season-long loan deal worth €7.5 million with AS Roma from Stamford Bridge, reuniting with his former boss, Jose Mourinho, at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
The Blues were adamant about their plans, which unfortunately did not accommodate the Belgian international. This led to AS Roma and Chelsea finalizing a loan agreement for the striker until the summer of 2024, a mutually beneficial decision for both the English club and the player.
The Italian side invested £5 million to secure the services of the 31-year-old striker, who agreed to a wage cut to play in the Italian capital, now receiving an annual salary of nearly €9 million.
The Belgian international has been in stunning form at the Serie A club since joining them in August. So far this season, he has bagged 16 goals and provided two assists across all competitions in 30 matches. Currently, he is the team’s top scorer.
Roma’s Romelu Lukaku addresses his future post-contract
Chelsea loanee once again came to the rescue for Roma in their UEFA Europa League play-off, first-leg fixture against the Dutch club Feyenoord, on Thursday. He scored a headed goal in the 67th minute to level the scoreline and keep his side’s aspirations alive to progress through the competition, extending his scoring spree to 6 goals in the championship.
Post-match, when questioned about his uncertain future after his current term with Roma expires in the summer, the striker emphasized his complete focus on the present, describing it as living a dream.
“Right now, I am focused on Roma; there’s no point in talking about the future. I want to help Roma win. This is the life of a football player, with its ups and downs,” he said.
He added, “I am truly living a dream. I play in a league that has given me so much, and now I want to do everything I can to help Roma win.”
With his latest goal, Romelu Lukaku now ranks third as the UEFA Europa League’s all-time top scorer, with 26 goals in the competition’s history. Additionally, he is the all-time top scorer for his country, boasting a tally of 83 goals in 113 national caps.
