Napoli created history last season when they lifted the Serie A trophy after many long years. Part of the reason was their star striker, Victor Osimhen, who scored 26 goals in the path to winning the trophy. Despite interest from many clubs, the Nigerian had decided to stay at the club to repay the fan’s trust and love for him.
But the relationship between club and player has been damaged in recent days. Napoli had released some insulting videos of the player on their TikTok, which led to Osimhen being angered. As rumors of his possible exit come out, the Italian side has already lined up a replacement.
Gabriel Jesus has caught Napoli’s attention for striker role
Napoli is now heavily interested in Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus, as reports of Osimhen leaving keep increasing. This is according to Italian media outlet Calciomercato, which believes Chelsea may move to bring in the player to Stamford Bridge this summer. Other clubs, such as Manchester United and Real Madrid, are also interested and there could be a tug of war regarding the Nigerian superstar this summer.
Considering Victor’s importance for them, there is no doubt this is a position they would need to strengthen in. The club already has two replacement targets: Alvaro Morata of Atletico Madrid and Lille’s rising young talent, Jonathan David.
But Jesus is the third one and is also a surprising addition to the rumors. Despite only signing for the Gunners in 2022, he is being linked with a transfer due to his lack of good performances at the club. However, manager Mikel Arteta is said to continue backing him.
With the Brazilian having four years left at his club, it will be hard for the club to buy him. But if Victor is sold for a high fee, reported to be as high as €150 million, then the funds could be used.
Osimhen pledges loyalty to Napoli
But Osimhen may not leave just yet. The striker had posted a message on his social media platform, writing about the love the fans have for him: “Coming to the City of Naples in 2020 was a wonderful decision for me. The people of Napoli have shown me so much love and kindness, and I will not allow anyone to come between us.”
He continued by saying that he wants to play for Napoli fans as he wants to continue to repay the love he has received from them: “The passion of the People of Naples fuels my fire to always play with my heart and soul, and the love for the badge is unwavering as I wear it with pride.”
By pledging his loyalty to the fans and club, Victor has assured that he will stay. Earlier, owner Aurelio de Laurentiis reportedly rejected many offers and will continue to do so. He wants Osimhen to sign a new deal to secure his future at the club.
However, there is no guarantee what the future holds. If a club comes in with a huge bid, both club and player may decide to part ways finally. If that happens, Napoli must be prepared to strengthen the team.
