Lionel Messi joined David Beckham’s Inter Miami on a free transfer in July, and the Argentine has been in great form for his new club. Messi’s first contribution to the team came in the Leagues Cup against Cruz Azul, where he scored a trademark free kick from the edge of the penalty area to give Inter Miami a 2-1 win in the competition’s group stages.
His run of form in the competition led him to score ten goals in seven appearances for Inter Miami in the Leagues Cup, with his effort in the final proving enough to win the club its first title since it was founded. Inter Miami are now prepared to lose Messi for a few matches in the coming weeks.
Lionel Messi set to miss Inter Miami games
Inter Miami will have to cope without their new star for their next few games after the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner was named in Argentina’s squad to play in the FIFA World Cup qualifying matches. The Argentine led his country to a World Cup triumph in 2022 after Argentina beat France in the final, courtesy of their star man’s brace, and they’re not about to start their journey for the next World Cup without him.
This means that the former PSG superstar will miss a few games for Inter Miami while he’s on international duties with Argentina. The reigning world champions will kickstart their qualifying campaign against Ecuador in Buenos Aires on September 7, three days after Inter Miami are scheduled to play an MLS match against Angeles FC.
Messi is expected to join Argentina next week, which means he will most likely miss his club’s next two matches, including the one against Sporting KC on September 10, the same day Argentina will face Bolivia for their last round of qualifier.
Messi secures second spot in UEFA Player of the Year award
The annual UCL group stage draw was held yesterday, and awards were given to players who impressed the most in the 22/23 season. Haaland, Messi, and De Bruyne were nominated for the men’s Player of the Year award, and the Manchester City forward scooped the award for his outstanding performances in the Champions League last season, which also saw him top the UCL scoring chart with 12 goals.
Lionel Messi played in Europe last season with PSG, but the French giants were dumped out of the competition by Bayern Munich in the last 16. Although the Argentine lifted the Ligue 1 title and World Cup, they weren’t enough to make him take the UEFA award ahead of Haaland.
Regardless the Argentine great has had a stellar season with his country as Argentina lifted the FIFA World Cup last December in Qatar. Will Lionel Messi impress in the upcoming international break for his country? Well, the magic man never fails to deliver, does he?
