Jack Doohan is one of the many names that appeared during the Abu Dhabi GP FP1 sessions. He is a promising driver in Formula 2 and one of the best bets that Alpine undertook in their driver development programme.
A lot of people were speculating about Alpine’s recent addition after they lost Oscar Piastri earlier on and his surname rings a bell among many motorsport enthusiasts. We will be covering all that we know about the Formula 2 driver and about his potential debut in Formula 1 racing scene.
Who is Jack Doohan?
Jack Doohan is no stranger to motorsport, as he is the son of a famous MotoGP rider and five-time 500-cc world champion, Mick Doohan. The 20-year-old Australian is a competitor in the 4-wheeled racing category, unlike his father and currently races in Formula 2. He started karting in 2012 with a kart gifted to him by F1 legend Michael Schumacher and went on to win the 2015 and 2016 Australian Karting Championships.
Doohan made his moves in the Formula racing scene and joined the Formula 3 feeder series in 2020, ending up with an extremely difficult season amidst several challenges during the race and many incidents. He later joined Trident in 2021 and ended second in the driver’s championship after helping Trident secure the constructor’s title with a race win in the last race of the season.
Jack Doohan had similar entry in the Formula 2 racing arena after he joined MP Motorsports for the last two rounds of the season, scoring a meager 19th place with 8 points. He raced in Formula 2 series for 2 years with Virtuosi Racing and secured a 3rd place finish in overall standings in 2023 by winning the Abu Dhabi feature race.
Alpine junior driver ready for F1 jump
Jack Doohan joined as the reserve driver for Alpine in 2023 and has had numerous chances behind the wheel of their A522. He will not return to the Formula 2 feeder series in favor of Alpine’s extensive driver development programme. While Doohan will have to wait before he can get a potential entry in Formula 1, he has proved his skills as he was the 4th fastest rookie during the Abu Dhabi practice sessions. Doohan also passed out an emerging opportunity in Indycar as he wanted to focus on Formula 1.
In his own words during an interview, “Had quite a lot of options in all sub-formula and inside formulas other than Formula 1. So not that the opportunities were shy—Super Formula, IndyCar, Hypercar, whatever it was—I was very fortunate to have those options. However, at this point in time, I feel it’s crucial that I focus only on Formula 1, which is heavily provided by Alpine, so that I’m able to stay within a car.”
Jack Doohan might be a compelling option for Alpine in future but do you think he may get featured in Le Mans, alongside Mick Schumacher or as his replacement? Do tell us in the comments section.
