Anthony Barr, once a dazzling name in the NFL, lost his charm in spite of not exceeding a decade in the national football league. By dint of having greater functional strength than opponents might realize, he was able to build a stellar resume with the teams he played.
While the NFL fans are on the way of forgetting Barr’s name amid many other prospective players, one reporter has made the effort to remind them of his greatness while trying to ink him with the Green Bay Packers as they attempt to move past their defense problems.
Who is Anthony Barr?
Anthony Barr’s NFL stint started under the wings of the Minnesota Vikings after the team picked him as the ninth overall selection in the 2014 NFL Draft. After Chris Doleman in 1985, he was the second-highest drafted linebacker in Vikings history.
With 98 starts, 39 tackles for loss, 17.5 sacks, 8 forced fumbles, 5 interceptions, and 31 pass breakups, the player had a spectacular career in Minnesota.
With the Vikings the 31-year-old made four straight Pro Bowls from 2015-18 before ending up his Viking career to join the Dallas Cowboys. In last season, Barr signed a one-year deal worth up to $3 million with the Dallas Cowboys. With the Dallas team, he kept shining by assisting them as a crucial threat for the opposing team’s offense.
Anthony Barr appeared in 14 games with 10 starts for the Cowboys and recorded 58 tackles. After the end of the Cowboy’s one year contract, the linebacker has not been signed by any NFL team.
Packers grapple with defensive injuries with starting LB’s sidelined
After Aaron Rodgers left the Green Bay Packers this offseason, the team was projected to get a good hit in their offense. Even though the Packers tried to replace the void with Jordan Love, their backup quarterback, the team eventually failed. Love gained his team’s trust and made significant progress over the previous season, but it is still insufficient to secure a victory.
In addition to their faltering offense, the Packers have made news lately for their defensive line injuries. Due to injuries, their starting linebackers Quay Walker and De’Vondre Campbell missed many games.
Campbell has not played since the start of the Green Bay Packers’ victory over the New Orleans Saints in Week Three. He is also doubtful for the team’s Week Seven encounter with the Denver Broncos. Walker was hurt in the knee during their Week 5 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.
Hence, reportedly, Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine asked them to consider signing free agent Anthony Barr due to their defense’s apparent shortcomings. Ballentine urged the Packers to bring Anthony as their third-string linebacker to address their defensive issues.
“The Packers should be familiar with his game from his eight years with the Vikings. He could be the team’s third linebacker and even offer some heat as a situational blitzer.”
Fans of the Packers remember the linebacker not just for his incredible accomplishments but also for infamously shattering the collarbone of former 18-season veteran Aaron Rodgers during a sacking in 2017. Nevertheless, Rodgers is no longer with the Green Bay Packers.
