United are in need of goals this season and have identified Brian Brobbey as a potential target to help bring more goals to the team. It’s been a rollercoaster season for United fans, as they’ve gone from being title favorites to being in a battle for a top-four spot.
Rasmus Hojlund, United’s mega-money signing from Atalanta last summer, is finding the going tough in the Premier League, and Erik Ten Hag has identified his former player at Ajax as a potential option to help bring some goals to the team this January. Who is Brian Brobbey, the man who has scored 12 goals in all competitions for Ajax this season?
Who is Brian Brobbey?
Brian Brobbey has had quite a straightforward direction up until this point in his career. He joined the Ajax youth setup Jong Ajax in 2010 as a little boy before working his way through the ranks, which led to his first-team debut 10 years later in 2020.
Brobbey’s debut came during the pandemic-ravaged season in 2020 under manager Erik Ten Hag. The Dutchman came as a substitute to score a surprising goal on his debut in the Eredivisie in the 5-2 win over Fortuna Sittard.
Sadly, his first stint at the club came to an end the following year after his contract expired at the club. He quickly signed for German side RB Leipzig but found regular minutes difficult to come by, and he was subsequently sent back to Ajax less than six months after leaving.
He scored seven goals while on loan at his boyhood club, forcing the club to sign him on a permanent deal in the summer of 2022. Brian Brobbey finished that season with 14 goals in all competitions for Ajax, picking up the league’s Talent of the Month award twice that season. This was a testament to the quality he brought to the Ajax squad, who recently added Jordan Henderson to their ranks.
Erik Ten Hag eyeing Brobbey reunion
Erik Ten Hag has been eyeing several former players, with reports linking him with a summer move for former Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt after the Dutchman has found regular minutes hard to come by at German club Bayern Munich.
Erik Ten Hag has now shifted his attention to Brian Brobbey, with United struggling for goals. The 2022-born forward has scored 12 goals in all competitions this season, more than Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund combined.
Whether United manage to get Brobbey or not, the club needs major changes in the team, and a goalscoring striker is one of the things they need to bring in to achieve success in the coming years.
