Who is Carson Wentz, veteran QB Rams reportedly adding to roster amid Matthew Stafford’s thumb injury?

The Los Angeles Rams are sitting in the third spot in the NFC West with a lackluster 3-6 record. After losing back-to-back three games in the last few weeks, they are almost out of the playoff run this season unless any miracle happens.

Besides going down by more than 15 points in the last two games against the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers, the Rams had another headache about their starting quarterback Matthew Stafford, as he sustained an injury lately. Having big opponents in the upcoming games, the team has decided to sign a new member, Carson Wentz, to their roster to have a balance in their QB room.

Who is Carson Wentz?

Carson Wentz, an NFL quarterback, started his NFL journey after getting selected by the Philadelphia Eagles as their second overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. He was projected to enjoy a prolific stint with the team, but an injury during Week 14 of the 2017 season came along the way.

The signal-caller still possesses Philly’s all-time single-season touchdown record (33) in 2017 and spent five years with them before losing his starting position to Nick Foles. The veteran’s downfall started to happen after his tenure in Philadelphia, as he couldn’t find a stable position in any franchise.

Wentz was traded to the Indianapolis Colts in 2021 where he went 9-8 as a starter after missing out on the postseason. He played with the Washington Commanders last year and started just seven games before ending the 2022 NFL season with a terrible 2-5 record and ultimately getting released by the team in February.

The Kansas City Chiefs were reported to have an eye on Wentz to make the backup of their Superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes. However, the move didn’t happen and instead, the Rams took the chance to enroll him on their roster, per Tyler Dragon of USA Today. The signal-caller will confirm the deal after passing a physical.

Stafford sustained a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb during the Rams’ loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. He couldn’t play against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. The team said their QB is “progressing well” and that they would give him time before they have to reach a final conclusion about his availability on the field.

Brett Rypien took over his spot in the game against the Packers where the Rams had to digest a 3-20 loss. He went 13-of-28 with two fumbles for an interception and got waived by the franchise on Tuesday.

The Rams also released their QB Dresser Winn on Sunday from their practice squad to make room for Carson Wentz. What’s your take on the team’s recent move in the QB room? Tell us in the comments.
