More often than not, Harry Maguire, like several other footballers, has always been judged by his performances on the pitch, with little to no sympathy for him or whatever is going on in his life. The 30-year-old English defender has endured a torrid past few months, losing his status at Manchester United, and having England fans turn against him.
Only a few people have backed Maguire publicly; understandably, his mother is one of them. The passionate mother has now released an emotional statement, hitting out at the people who have been attacking her son verbally, without any respect for him.
Harry Maguire’s mother slams English defender’s critics
Harry Maguire’s mother has passionately hit out at his son’s detractors for how badly they’ve treated the former United captain in recent months. The English defender is currently going through the roughest patch in his career, losing his captaincy at Manchester United, and often made the scapegoat whenever something goes wrong for England.
The 30-year-old scored an own goal minutes after coming on in England’s 2-1 victory over Scotland, prompting boos from the England fans. Zoe Maguire Wilkinson, the England international’s mother, has now come out to defend her son.
“As a mum, seeing the level of negative and abusive comments in which my son is receiving from some fans, pundits, and the media is disgraceful and totally unacceptable to any walk of life, never mind someone who works his socks off for club and country,” the defender’s mom said in a statement posted on her Instagram story.
“I understand that in the football world, there are ups and downs, positives and negatives, but what Harry receives has gone far beyond ‘football’. For me seeing him go through what he’s going through is not okay. I would hate to have to see any other parents or players go through this in the future, especially the young boys and girls breaking the ranks today. Harry has a massive heart, and it’s a good job; he’s mentally strong and can handle it as others may not be able to. I wish this sort of abuse on nobody,” she concluded.
Maguire discussed his Manchester United status
Maguire has opened up on his status at Manchester United, claiming he would eventually get his chance at the club. “I’ve not started a game in the first four games of the season, the story comes to me. I want to play football. I can deal with criticism. The first four weeks were hard because it was one game a week, and the manager didn’t select me, but we have lots of games coming up now. I’m sure I will play lots of games,” the United defender said.
The former Leicester City defender also discussed his failed move to West Ham this summer. “West Ham? We just didn’t come to an agreement. Man Utd were happy for me to stay, and I was happy to fight for my place,” he said.
