The Green Bay Packers have made the playoffs four times in the last five years. After leaving the quarterbacking task to Jordan Love, they thought this season’s playoff would see them succeed. Love was projected to outshine the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional playoff game. However, one costly mistake of Anders Carlson and some inconsistencies cost them the win.
Following their season end, the Packers parted ways with their defensive coordinator Joe Barry. Now, they have hired college head coach Jeff Hafley as their new defensive coordinator.
Who is Jeff Hafley?
The current Defensive Coordinator of the Packers, Jeff Hafley, has had a diverse and successful coaching career. Before joining the NFL ranks, he began his coaching journey in college football, and served as an assistant for various programs from 2001 to 2011.
In 2012, the veteran transitioned to the NFL, taking on the role of assistant defensive backs coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Thanks to his expertise, he quickly earned a promotion to defensive backs coach in 2013. However, the coaching carousel continued, and led him to the Cleveland Browns in 2014 and 2015, where he held the same position.
The coach re-entered the college football scene in 2016, taking on the role of defensive backs coach for the San Francisco 49ers. He held this position successfully until 2018, and his significant contributions did not go unnoticed. In 2019, the veteran embraced a dual role as the defensive backs coach and co-defensive coordinator at Ohio State University.
During the 2019 season at Ohio State, Jeff Hafley’s defensive expertise was prominently displayed. In his role as co-defensive coordinator, he played a vital part in leading the Buckeyes to impressive rankings in various defensive categories. Their scoring defense secured the 4th position, permitting only 13.7 points per game. They claimed the top rank in total defense by restricting opponents to just 260 yards per game. In the passing game, they were unrivaled, securing the 1st rank by allowing a mere 156 yards per game.
Later the same year, Hafley was hired to be the HC at Boston College. He led the squad to a 22–26 overall record and three bowl game appearances before returning to the NFL.
Packers appoint Hafley to DC role
Jeff Hafley’s appointment as the Packets DC marks the third instance this year of a sitting college HC making the leap to a coordinator role. Having a longstanding connection with Packers head coach Matt LaFleur and a deep admiration for the franchise, Hafley brings both familiarity and enthusiasm to his new position.
“We are excited to welcome Jeff, his wife, Gina, and their daughters, Hope and Leah, to the Packers and the Green Bay community. Jeff has had success at every stop of his coaching career with an impressive track record of developing players at every level. We look forward to him leading our defense”, LaFleur after enrolling the veteran.
Jeff Hafley’s appointment comes at a crucial time for the Packers, as they are looking to shore up their defensive efforts after a somewhat lackluster season. Despite finishing 17th in total defense and 10th in scoring, the team struggled in key moments. They gave up crucial points in losses to various opponents throughout the year.
The Packers’ defense performed decently in the regular season but faltered in critical postseason matchups. They gave up a late lead in a divisional round loss to the San Francisco 49ers. With Hafley now leading the defense, the Packers will aim to improve their points per drive along with scoring percentage, yards per play, and third-down conversion rate. Hafley steps into a team with significant potential, featuring promising talents like Rashan Gary and Quay Walker.
