Who is Jimbo Fischer, receiving $75,000,000 for not coaching Texas A&M?

A mediocre season is enough to have a football coach fired, whether they are employed by a school system or an NFL franchise. In the middle of the season, the Las Vegas Raiders made the audacious decision to cut Josh McDaniels’ contract. Texas A&M, a school football team, went on fire following the NFL, forcing their head coach, Jimbo Fischer, to step down.

While the Raiders were financially strained by McDaniels’ relocation, the Aggies’ name was permanently inscribed in the school football book by Fischer’s dismissal.

Who is Jimbo Fischer?

Jimbo Fischer’s tenure as head coach of the Texas squad began in December 2017, following eight seasons as head coach of Florida State University. He guided Florida State to a national championship as their coach, inspiring the Aggies to envision a win-based coaching staff.

Under his leadership, the club finished 45-25 and 27-21 in the Southeastern Conference rather than earning a championship.  His failure in Texas added more salt to the disappointing stint after his team lacked success to win the SEC West and was also able to play in the College Football Playoff during his tenure.

The Aggies have never prevailed in more than nine games in a season during this span of time. Not to mention, Texas A&M has gone 19–15 since winning the Orange Bowl and placing fourth in the Associated Press poll in 2020. Amid this consecutive failure, Jimbo Fischer agreed to a new 10-year contract that included a $95 million guarantee in 2021.

Fischer to receive record-breaking buyout fee

Following a 51-10 victory against Mississippi State on Saturday night in College Station, Texas A & A&M made it public that they were no longer interested in stretching their bonding with Jimbo Fischer. The revelation came out following a thorough investigation and recommendations were provided to President Mark Welsh and  Chancellor John Sharpby by the team’s athletic director Ross Bjork.

“After very careful analysis of all the components related to Texas A&M football, I recommended to President (Mark) Welsh and then Chancellor (John) Sharp that a change in the leadership of the program was necessary in order for Aggie football to reach our full potential and they accepted my decision.”

The stint of the 58-year-old failed to glorify their standings, yet Bjork concluded his take on the former coach with profound respect and appreciation.

“We appreciate Coach Fisher’s time here at Texas A&M and we wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

The change will have a price tag of the school more than $75 million, albeit its effects on the field are still unknown. Jimbo Fischer will be receiving record-breaking buyout money as a result of the relocation.

Since it is almost three times more than the most well-known coaching contract buyout at a public institution. The story surfaced after Micah Parson of the Cowboys voiced his displeasure with the practice of putting a head coach’s contract in a favored position.

According to ESPN, Texas A&M owes Fisher $19.2 million in the next sixty days, and they will continue to pay him $7.2 a year until 2031. Elijah Robinson, associate head coach, will now take over as the Aggies’ temporary head coach.
