Among the worst NFL teams, the New York Giants already gained wide backlash with their standing at the bottom of the division with a 2-7 record. For the squad, nearly everything has gone wrong. They finally lost their starter, Daniel Jones, due to a season-ending injury, forcing them to look for a replacement in Matt Barkley.
This move presented a challenge to Barkley, who will now look to build on his Giants comeback story after being out of the game for more than two years.
Who is Matt Barkley?
The NFL career of Matt Barkley got underway with the Philadelphia Eagles, who are now leading the NFC East, and the Giants in the bottom slot. The former USC player was drafted by the Eagles in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft. With the Eagles, his tenure lasted for only four games in his rookie season.
After skipping the whole 2014 season, the former Eagles player was then picked up by the Arizona Cardinals, but never saw the field, being their third string QB. The Cardinals ended up releasing him early in the 2016 season before his greatest season appearance in the NFL in 2016 with the Chicago Bears. His 14 games in Chicago let him accumulate 1,611 yards, 8 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions.
In 2018, he launched a new career with the Buffalo Bills where he saw another unsuccessful season. Later, the Bills made final roster cuts and Matt Barkley was placed on injury reserve due to an elbow injury he suffered in the preseason. During his lackluster NFL career, he has started seven games and tossed 11 touchdown passes and 22 interceptions, per NBC Sports.
Giants add Barkley to QB ranks in wake of Daniel Jones injury
After skipping three games with a neck injury, Daniel Jones showed his determination for a bounce-back performance before their Week 9 clash against the Las Vegas Raiders. Unfortunately, the Giants not only met a terrible 30-9 loss to the Raiders but also embraced the same luck as their city team, the New York Jets’ regarding their starter Aaron Rodgers.
As Jones is said to be out for the season, suffering a season-ending ACL injury, the Giants are making a move for the quarterback room, putting Jones’s name on the IR list.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported that the Giants are going to sign Matt to the 53-man roster off of its practice squad, in spite of having Tommy DeVito on the roster.
Prior to the move, ESPN’s Adam Schefter outlined on The Pat McAfee Show Monday that having two options on hand, and the Giants might go for Barkley to allow him to have another comeback story.
“You only have two quarterbacks on the roster right now, Tommy DeVito and Matt Barkley. Now, they wouldn’t commit to either one. There’s a real possibility that Barkley is going to wind up starting for the Giants this Sunday at Dallas, and I would imagine they’re going to have to add another quarterback just to get someone on the roster.”
Meanwhile, Matt Barkley’s stint was previously marred by his failure to show a promising outlook and injuries. Do you think the move will be an ideal one for the Giants?
