College football is a massive springboard for young athletes to make it through to the big leagues. It throws the spotlight on these youngsters to perform for their alma mater and bring the prestigious NCAA title home.
However, there have been some dark days in the history of college and professional football involving gruesome injuries and other serious incidents. The injury of Virginia State’s Perris Jones will surely go down as one of them. Let’s find out more.
Who is Perris Jones?
Perris Jones, running back for the Virginia Cavaliers, is a senior at his alma mater. Currently, he is pursuing a master’s degree in educational psychology. The young RB finished high school with over 5,000 rushing yards, making him one of the most exciting prospects in the world of college football.
Jones was born into a bustling family of four younger sisters—Kendra, Psalmn, Reign, and Clancey—and was blessed with a younger brother named Stevie. Outside the football field, Perris dedicates his time to volunteering with Royal Athletes, where he passionately mentors kids. Beyond what he does in college, Perris is a creative soul who finds solace in playing the guitar and crafting beautiful poems.
Perris Jones injury update
In their game against the Louisville Cardinals, Virginia RB Perris Jones suffered a devastating injury that left him immobilized for several minutes out on the pitch. After receiving a 7-yard pass from teammate Anthony Colandrea, Jones started to run upfield. However, he lost control of the ball and fumbled right before Cam’Ron Kelly of the Cardinals clattered into him.
The collision rendered him unconscious for about 15 minutes, which felt like an eternity for all those in attendance. In the end, Perris Jones was carted off on a stretcher, and the game carried on. Unfortunately, the Cavaliers lost the game 31-24 despite their valiant effort. “I’m just praying for him,” said Cam’Ron Kelly while reflecting on the incident. “I said my piece to him when he was on the stretcher. I’ve got nothing but love for him. I hope he has a speedy recovery.”
In what comes as a silver lining from this dark chapter, it is reported that Perris Jones has regained mobility in all four of his limbs. Currently, he is under observation and recuperating successfully at UofL Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.
Speaking about Jones’ current condition, coach Kelly said, “It’s a very, very difficult reality of the sport that we play, that every play can end that way, and you don’t wish that for anybody. Man, I know one thing: (Perris Jones) is a tough young man and he lays it on the line every time he goes out there for this football team. (We’re) believing and praying that he’s going to have a full recovery. I’m putting that in the Lord’s hands and I’m asking for that in advance and believing that that’s going to be the case.”
