Staying silent about a rumor could cost one their job, and Max Eberl has learned that lesson the hard way. The former managing director for sports at German club RB Leipzig only linked up with the club last year and oversaw huge outgoing transfers that fetched the club a lot of money, like Jasko Gvardiol’s move to Manchester City and Szobozslai’s transfer to Liverpool.
Bayern had been interested in Eberl since shaking things up at the club following the departure of Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic after the club’s last game of the season. Eberl’s refusal to comment on the rumor has ultimately cost him his job at Leipzig, which fired the former Bayern Munich player a day before their top clash in the Bundesliga.
Who is RB Leipzig’s former sports director Max Eberl?
Max Eberl is one of those people who have been involved in football all their lives. The German was a highly-rated youngster in his days, representing Bayern Munich for three years from 1991 to 1994. After finding regular minutes hard to come by, Eberl moved a division below to play for Vfl Bochum, where he played until 1997, making 42 appearances and not scoring a single goal.
The German international made two more years on the move at Greuther Furth before making a permanent switch to Borussia Monchengladbach, where he spent the final six years of his career, making a whopping 137 appearances. After retiring from the game as a player, he became the academy manager for Monchengladbach until 2008 before becoming the sporting director of the club, a role he assumed until 2022 when he joined RB Leipzig in the same capacity.
Eberl’s experience brought good fortunes to the club as they made premium profits on sales from the likes of Jasko Gvardiol, who was transferred to Manchester City as the world’s most expensive defender, and Dominik Szoboszlai, whom Liverpool forked out a record transfer fee to secure. Apart from these outgoing signings, Eberl also oversaw the signing of some youngsters, including Xavi Simmons, a loan signing from PSG, and Lois Openda.
RB Leipzig fired Max Eberl amid Bayern Munich links
RB Leipzig released a statement confirming the sacking of Max Eberl for failing to commit to the club amid rumors linking him with a move to Bayern Munich. “RB Leipzig have relieved Max Eberl of his duties with immediate effect,” the club said in a statement on their website. “His failure to commit to the club has led us to making this decision. It has nothing to do with the squad’s rebuild or results on the pitch. Sporting director Rouven Schroder will take over. We would like to thank Max for his work and wish him all the best for the future,” the club added.
It’s unclear yet whether Eberl will make a move to Bayern Munich amid strong links. RB Leipzig play Bayern Munich today in the Bundesliga as Bayern look to leapfrog Dortmund to move to the top of the table while RB Leipzig hope to make it five wins from five games.
