Despite the buzz surrounding the women’s game, one name is drawing eyes to men’s college basketball. ISU’s Robbie Avila is the one creating a lot of buzz in the uni court scene, but the reason is not only his eye-catching performances.
Who is Robbie Avila?
The Indiana State Sycamores have presented yet another college basketball sensation after one of the greatest sharpshooters of the game, Larry Bird. Robbie Avila, the Indiana baller is grabbing all the eyes for his potential.
The Illinois-born center spent his high school days with Oak Forest. In his junior year Avila averaged 25.5 points per game which was 23.9 in his senior year. After becoming the all-time top scorer for his high school, Avila joined Indiana State University.
The goggle-framed center helped the Indiana State win the Missouri Valley Conference championship in the regular season with his averages of 17.1 points and 6.6 rebounds, 4 assists per game.
Talking about his smart plays and on-court dominance his coach Josh Schertz said, “He can get a rebound and lead the break. We can play offense through him. He can step out, shoot 3s. He has an unbelievable basketball IQ.” Despite his talents, ISU failed to reach the NCAA tournament, but his terrific talent has earned him several nicknames that mirror several NBA legends.

On being compared to the Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic, Avila expressed his joy and said, “He’s definitely someone I look after. Jokic is a big man that can play both inside and outside, and his ability to create is something I try to model after him.” The youngster is shooting at 43.2% from the 3-point range and 56.2% from the field maintaining his dominance.
