It took six years for Paula Badosa to win her first WTA 1000 Series champion. The Spanish star lifted the 2021 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells after defeating Victoria Azarenka in a third-set tiebreaker to cap off one of the most entertaining matches of the year.

Badosa also reached the 2021 Madrid Open semifinals becoming the first Spanish woman to reach the last four in the tournament’s history. Paula Badosa withdrew from the 2023 US Open after sustaining a back problem, where she was due to face Venus Williams in the first round. She confirmed the injury and also announced that she would not be competing again until 2024 stating, “After struggling for many months to compete again, I am ending my season.”

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Paula Badosa’s sweet romance began when they met in Rome, during the Italian Open. Speaking of their first meeting, Tsitsipas recounted, “I made a bet with myself. I said ‘I’ll send Badosa a message if she wins her second-round match in Rome’ and she was playing very well, so I thought ‘Hey I have a good chance of achieving that today.’”

“She did end up winning the match, so I kept my promise and I messaged her, ‘Congratulations,’ and I guess you can say, that’s how it started.”, he recalled.

“I changed my life because Paula Badosa brought a bright light into it, and I did the same for her. I’ll be completely honest, I’ve never been more excited about the future, both in my private life and in my professional life. I really want to make the most of it.”

Paula Badosa spoke to the Associated Press about what it was like to support Tsitsipas when he was injured. “Watching it from the outside, maybe I get a little bit more nervous, because I cannot control it. But I’m happy that he got the win, and it was a crazy match. Happy that we both got through first round,” she said.

Tsitsipas and Badosa were scheduled to play as a team in a mixed doubles match at Wimbledon in July 2023, but Badosa had to withdraw because of a spinal injury.
