Who was on the receiving end of Travis Kelce’s punch during practice? Exploring altercation in Chiefs practice

The Kansas City Chiefs Travis Kelce has always been known for his rather humorous nature. Time and again he made the NFL fans burst into laughter with hilarious activities including the White House incident when the tight end decided to take over the Presidential podium to convey some words, albeit Patrick Mahomes saved him from any further embarrassment by instantly taking him away from the mic.

However, Kelce has not been able to keep up his funny and cool nature on the field recently as he got into physical altercations with one of his teammates during practice.

Kelce throws a punch at Jack Cochrane during the Chiefs’ practice

During Saturday’s training camp, Kelce hauled in a touchdown pass from Mahomes and threw a punch with his left hand in the direction of second-year linebacker Jack Cochrane. The backup LB tried to knock the ball out of the Chiefs TE’s hands at the end of the play. The eight-time Pro Bowler lost his cool and punched his fellow teammate in anger as he took a late swipe at the ball.

Travis and Jack kept pushing and were seen chirping at each other before the Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie appeared on the spot to pull them apart. The 33-year-old veteran was also involved in a heated altercation with a referee in Friday’s training camp for “more extracurricular activity than usual,” per Pete Sweeney of Arrowhead Pride.

The 2018 NFL MVP has earlier acknowledged his inability to control his emotions at some times, though it mostly happened earlier in his career and he was penalized several times for unsportsmanlike conduct. The football prodigy was even ejected from a match against the Jacksonville Jaguars for tossing a towel at the referee following his call for a penalty back in 2016.

Travis Kelce vows to be a better teammate after the altercation

Kelce took a little time to reflect on what he had done and took to Twitter to convey a message to convey that he would try to be a good teammate and a good leader going forward,

“Gotta be a better teammate gotta be a better leader… plain and simple.”

The four-time All-Pro is arguably the second-most important player on Kansas City’s squad, after their two-time MVP quarterback Mahomes. He finished the regular season with 1,338 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns.

Expectations are sky-high for the new season after winning two Lombardi trophies in the last four years and it might be a catalyst for Kelce’s overreacting. However, while talking to the reporters after the practice session, the Chiefs’ head coach said fighting is not really a solution and urged athletes to realize its negative impact

“Fighting is a waste of time. You get thrown out of games doing it, you get hurt out here doing it. But they’re going to jaw. It’s hot, humid. They’re going to jaw a little bit. Just as long as there are not punches thrown, we’re all right.”
