Why did AEW fire CM Punk? CEO Tony Khan releases statement following backstage incident

CM Punk has been one of the most decorated superstars in the pro wrestling industry. The superstar has earned himself a huge fanbase over his run as a wrestler in the UFC, WWE, and AEW.

However, the star has a very bad tendency to always get fired from promotions due to his bad temper and jealousy of other wrestler’s success on the roster. The superstar was recently fired from AEW for a backstage brawl with another fellow wrestler.

Why did AEW fire CM Punk?

CM Punk has been fired from All Elite Wrestling, also known as AEW, effective immediately. The promotion announced the termination hours before the airing of AEW: Collision on TNT this Saturday.

Punk was terminated after a weeklong internal investigation into the backstage fight between him and wrestler Jack Perry at ‘All In London‘ on Aug. 27.

According to reports, Perry took a verbal shot at CM Punk regarding the use of real glass during his match against Hook. After the bout, Perry exchanged some words with Punk backstage, which then escalated into a physical confrontation. Both wrestlers were subsequently suspended, and an investigation was launched by the management team of the company.

Tony Khan releases statement after firing CM Punk

CM Punk made his AEW return at the inaugural Collision show on June 17 after being away from the ring for 10 months due to his suspension for a backstage altercation as well as an injured tricep. He made picky comments about The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega during the All Out post-event media segment on September 4, 2022.

However, Punk has again done the thing that the fans feared most. He has again been terminated by AEW due to his misconduct in the backstage area. This termination seems to be permanently effective, unlike the previous one.

In a recent video, AEW CEO Tony Khan said the decision was one of the most difficult in his professional career.

“I’ve been going to wrestling shows for over 30 years. I’ve been producing them on this network for nearly four years, Never in all that time have I ever felt, until last Sunday, that my security, my safety, my life was in danger at a wrestling show. I don’t think anybody should feel that way at work. I don’t think the people I work with should feel that way and I had to make a very difficult choice today.” said Khan.

Tony Khan further said the incident was investigated by an investigation committee within AEW, as well as an outside legal council that came to a mutual decision that led to Punk’s firing. CEO of AEW has apologized to the wrestling fans who are upset about Punk’s departure.
