Purdy’s prowess was further validated with a Pro Bowl selection last year, boasting a stellar 12-4 record. Now, as he gears up for another season as the 49ers’ QB1, his efforts have been recognized financially.
Why did Brock Purdy get $739K extra?
Brock Purdy received a substantial bonus of $739,795 from the NFL’s performance-based pay program. This bonus, nearly matching his base pay of $889,253, reflects his outstanding performance on the field relative to his salary level. Former Iowa State star stands out as the sole quarterback among the top 25 players on the performance-based pay distribution list.
The NFL distributed a total of $393.8 million to players who exceeded expectations based on their playing time and performance. This windfall for Purdy ranks as the 24th largest payout this year.
Team owner Jed York praised Purdy’s achievements by highlighting the importance of compensating QBs appropriately given their role in football.
“I think it’s a good problem when your quarterback is one of your highest-paid guys on your team and in the league. It’s not like Brock is going to ask for something that no one has ever asked for before. … The quarterback is the most important position, not just in football but in all sports. And those guys should be paid a lot of money”, he said via ESPN.
While Brock Purdy’s bonus stands out, it is worth noting other notable recipients. Baltimore Ravens guard John Simpson topped the list with a $974,613 bonus. Offensive linemen largely dominated the top spots, proving the critical role they play in the game.
Will Brock Purdy remain QB1 for the 49ers next season?
The NFL offseason unfolds, and speculation arises whether Brock Purdy will retain his position as QB1 for the 49ers in the upcoming season. Despite rumors of the team’s interest in Zach Wilson, his performance in the 2023 season solidifies his claim to the starting role. Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch have expressed confidence in Purdy’s abilities, even during times of adversity.
Selected in the 2022 NFL Draft, the signal-caller has proven himself to be a standout among his draft class. He outperformed his counterparts, who were drafted ahead of him.
