Deshaun Watson might be one of the most scrutinized players in the NFL due to his off-field controversies, but his on-field performance is really laudable. When the quarterback was healthy, the Browns were having almost a good season. However, unfortunately, he sustained a season-ending injury, and the team decided to bank on rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson for a while.
However, bad luck again found the Browns as the rookie star too sustained an injury, and the franchise later decided to sign Joe Flacco to let him lead the team for a while. The veteran has not failed to cope with the sky-high expectations and secured a win for the team as well, albeit he has now reverted back to the practice squad.
Why did Browns’ Joe Flacco return to the practice squad?
The Browns made history in Week 14, clinching a 31-27 victory, as the win not only secured their dominance on the field but also etched their name in the record books as only the eighth team in NFL history to parade four different starting quarterbacks in a single season since the 2015 Houston Texans.
The quartet of Flacco, Watson, PJ Walker, and Dorian Thompson-Robinson shared the spotlight throughout the season. Head coach Kevin Stefanski’s decision-making came under the spotlight following Flacco’s exceptional performance. Stefanski unequivocally announced the QB as the starter for the remainder of the season while commending his adaptability to the team’s system and his unwavering commitment on the field.
Now, the dual-threat has returned to the Browns’ practice squad, which might raise eyebrows. However, this move aligns with NFL roster regulations permitting teams to elevate players from the practice squad three times in a season. It is aimed at potential acquisitions or retaining additional practice squad members.
The Browns QB carousel spun unexpectedly when DTR endured an injury, thrusting Joe Flacco into the starting role in Week 13 against the Los Angeles Rams. Although the result wasn’t favorable, the signal-caller was granted another opportunity to lead the team in Week 14 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, which he perfectly utilized.
Joe Flacco is eligible to sign with another team
Joe Flacco has etched his name in the record books once again by surpassing Jeff Garcia’s record as the oldest Browns QB to achieve 300 passing yards and three passing touchdowns in a game by four years. Celebrating his 100th career win as a starting QB, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the Browns.
As he is currently on the practice squad, the signal-caller is eligible to sign with any team in the league. While the Browns are poised to offer him a contract, the prospect of him exploring other offers remains a possibility.
However, Adam Schefter reported the 16-year NFL veteran’s intention to stay in Cleveland. Even Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski assured fans and observers that there’s a plan in place by urging everyone not to fret over the situation.
“I’d say don’t worry about it. Because it’ll all work out. I wouldn’t be hung up on this one.”
The upcoming Week 15 matchup against the Chicago Bears looms large regarding speculation about Joe Flacco’s role.
Will he remain on the practice squad and be elevated for the game, or will the Browns secure his spot on the active roster? Stay tuned with us for the latest update.
