Why did FIA warn Lance Stroll for his actions during garage strop at Formula 1 Qatar GP 2023?

Lance Stroll, the son of team owner Lawrence Stroll, has faced controversy regarding nepotism in his racing career. He entered the team with the advantage of family connections and influencers rather than going through the conventional path of training under a former Formula 1 driver.

Renowned for displaying frustration during his performances, Lance Stroll’s conduct has, over time, negatively impacted the overall quality of his showings. Recently, he received a warning for his misbehavior at the Qatar Grand Prix.

Why did FIA warn Lance Stroll over garage strop?

Lance Stroll has been in fury after getting eliminated from the Qatar Grand Prix at the Losail Circuit. To escape from the situation, Stroll vented his anger by throwing the steering wheel out of his cockpit, followed by shoving his trainer Henry Howe, when he approached Stroll.

The entire scenario was caught red-handed on camera and soon went viral among F1 fans. The audience criticized the driver for his extreme carelessness and misbehavior just because he is the team owner’s son.

Stroll expressed his annoyance in a subsequent interview and later confessed the next day, “I despise having a poor day, but I won’t alter my attitude.”

The FIA have issues with the fact that they have a zero-tolerance policy against this misconduct while on the ground, and hence have discussed the entire matter with the Canadian and Belgian drivers.

Lance Stroll issues an apology after the FIA warning

Nevertheless, as mentioned earlier, the FIA compliance officer initiated talks with Stroll concerning his behavior and said there were “multiple occurrences that potentially breached FIA regulations, policies, and protocols” throughout the entire Qatar race weekend.

They further commented on this matter by saying, “We can confirm that the FIA compliance officer has received an apology from Lance Stroll regarding his actions during the 2023 FIA Formula 1 Qatar Grand Prix.” The compliance officer has noted this apology and issued a written warning, reminding Lance of his responsibilities as a competitor bound by the FIA Code of Ethics and other FIA ethical and conduct guidelines set forth by the sporting regulations.

“The FIA maintains a zero-tolerance stance against misconduct and condemns any actions that may lead to physical harassment.”

Judging the situation, Lance Stroll has officially apologized to the FIA for his actions, and has reassured that such behavior will never be repeated again.
