Why did Patrick Beverley discourage Jarred Vanderbilt from extending Lakers contract?

Patrick Beverley is a seasoned veteran in the NBA. He has played for many teams including the Lakers throughout his career and sure does know about contracts and deals a lot. Having signed a lot of them seems to have given Pat-Bev valuable experience and knowledge. He is among the few active senior players in the league who have played for almost a decade.

The experience these players holds are valueable for young and emerging stars who are just starting out in the league. Having a mentor like Patrick Beverley is a plus point for any player as it was seen with Jarred Vandebilt, who was advised to not extend his Lakers contract by Beverley.

Beverley’s controversial advice to Vanderbilt

Beverley played with Jarred during the 2021-22 season at the Minnesota Timberwolves. A close friendship developed between the duo and Beverly started to mentor Jarred. When Jarred was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, the team offered him with a contract extension. Pat-Bev jumped in to consult Vanderbilt and advised him against signing an extension.

Patrick talked about the incident on his Pat-Bev podcast and recollected telling Jarred to not sign the contract. Jarred appreciated the advice. Beverley reasoned that young talents get their worth paid in extensions and get overpaid as free agents. And in Patrick’s eyes what Vanderbilt does on the court is worth getting overpaid.

Lakers officially sign Jarred Vanderbilt to four-year contract extension

Jarred Vandebilt signed a 4 year $48 million worth contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers. The details of the deal have not yet been made public but there is talk of Vanderbilt having a player option in the fourth year of his contract.

Jarred’s journey with the Lakers started after he arrived at the team after his departure from Utah. Since then, he has become a key rotation player for the team and has not failed in playing the role assigned to him.

While his offensive performance is not very impressive, Vanderbilt’s impact on the team as a rotation player has been noticeable. His extension can be seen as an investment in future by the Lakers given, they are in a rebuilding phase right now.

What do you think of Pat-Bev’s advice to Jarred Vanderbilt? Do you think Vanderbilt will prove to be good investment for the LA Lakers? We are eager to know you opinion, so drop down in the comments and share with us.
