Why did Patriots release CB Jack Jones after two NFL seasons?

Though coach Bill Belichick recorded his 300th regular season win a few days ago, the New England Patriots losing streak is only getting worse day by day. With only two wins and eight defeats, the team is sitting at the bottom spot of the AFC East.

The other three teams in the division are in intense competition with each other but the Patriots are just out of the battle. The way they are heading towards the season, Belichick might even be sacked by Robert Kraft soon. Amid the speculation about the coach’s firing, Jack Jones, the Pats’ cornerback, lost his job after having a brief tenure with the franchise.

Why did the Patriots waive CB Jack Jones?

Ahead of the regular season, Jack Jones was arrested for “carrying two loaded guns” in his bags at Boston’s Logan Airport and was imposed nine weapons charges. He had to post a $30,000 bail before agreeing to serve “one year of pretrial probation” as well as “48 hours of community service” in September.

Despite the legal issues, the Patriots let the young star continue to play this season. According to Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald, he was given a chance to improve his attitude this week in Germany, but he didn’t, and even committed a disciplinary mishap by reporting late to the team hotel. His agent Jamal Tooson first revealed that the team waived the second-year player on Monday.

Besides off-field issues, the Pats were reportedly having second thoughts about the CB based on his on-field performance. He made his season debut in the franchise’s win over the Buffalo Bills in Week 7 and played more than 50% of the team’s defensive snaps.

Jack got a larger role in the Patriots Weeks 8 and 9 and played 105 of the 155 defensive snaps. However, his role was limited to just 18% of the team’s defensive snaps in their recent match against the Indianapolis Colts. ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported the cornerback wasn’t seen engaged with his fellow teammates on the sidelines as his role diminished and hence, was waived from the franchise due to these off-field activities.

What is CB Jack Jones’ contract with the Patriots?

Jack Jones headed to his NFL career after getting drafted by the Patriots with the 121st overall pick in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He was one of three fourth-round picks by the team. The franchise signed him to a rookie deal on June 9, 2022.

According to his agent, Jamal Tooson, the CB’s deal is for four years, $4.4 million along with a $747,000 signing bonus. In 2022, the fourth-round pick earned $705,000 in base salary along with a signing bonus of $746,984. In this season, he was set to make $870,000 in total salary, via Salary Sport.
