Why have fans been deprived of Michael Schumacher health update after horrific accident in 2013? Family lawyer explains the discreetness

Michael Schumacher is a name forever linked to one word-legend. The seven-time Formula 1 world champion was the ultimate symbol of speed and dominance in Formula 1. If you know Ferrari or currently follow them in Formula 1, it’s likely because of the immense success achieved by Michael Schumacher in the scarlet red.

This great man retired from F1 after his time with Mercedes in 2013. However, to the shock of the entire racing world, Michael Schumacher suffered a serious skiing accident that left him in a coma and in critical medical condition, a situation that continues to this day.

Schumacher family lawyer explains discreetness

The main concern for fans of the great driver isn’t his inability to walk among them and share his enduring personality and racing stories. What troubles them most is the limited information available about Michael Schumacher’s health and his accident. Even now, very little has been disclosed about the German racer.

Michael Schumacher’s family has upheld a strict privacy policy regarding his condition. While this might not align with public opinion, their family lawyer, Felix Damm, deems it necessary.

“It has always been about protecting private matters,” Damm explained. “Of course, we discussed a lot about how this is possible. We considered whether a final report about Michael’s health could be the right way to do this.”

“But that wouldn’t have been the end of it and there would have had to be constantly updated reports because the media could pick on such a report again and again and ask, “And what does it look like now”, one, two, or three months or years after the message.”

Schumacher’s final race

The Brazilian GP of 2012 marked the end of Michael Schumacher’s full-time F1 career. He had joined Mercedes in 2010 after they inherited the 2009 championship-winning Brawn GP, ending his three-year retirement since 2006. Schumacher boasted an impeccable record of 91 F1 wins, but he couldn’t add to it while at Mercedes. His last podium finish was at the 2012 Valencia GP, which also happened to be his only podium finish with the Mercedes team.

While departing for the final time from his fans, Schumacher replied ahead of the Brazilian GP, “I have had fantastic years in Formula One and a lot of support from fans around the world, and I wish to particularly thank them for that. Of course, I would be happiest if I could say goodbye with a strong race, and I am sure we will be doing everything we can to make it happen.”

He was replaced by the new hotshot Lewis Hamilton, who went on to dominate F1 in the upcoming years, breaking Michael’s records and dethroning him nearly in the 2021 season for the most championship titles.
