Before the regular season got started, former Super Bowl champion Los Angles Rams team came under fire with a piece of shocking news regarding their veteran player Sony Michael.
The Rams star opted for the end of his career immediately after playing national football for just a handful of seasons. His performance played a crucial part in the team’s final Lombardi Trophy victory. The news came after Sony attended the team training session for two days.
Rams RB Sony Michel decides to walk away from NFL
Michel started his NFL journey with the Patriots after being picked up by them in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Being only 28 years old, he arrived at the decision to retire from football, and Sean McVay gave him permission to do so. After the Rams’ third practice of training camp on Saturday, McVay announced the players’ retirement.
Following the minicamp, the Los Angeles Rams brought Sony back in the hopes of building on their previous Super Bowl run with him in 2021. He amassed 973 scrimmage yards and five touchdowns during that game.
“What a great career this guy has had,” he said. “The epitome of a pro, a great competitor, and his next chapter is going to be exciting. He’s got so many gifts that he can offer to people, and so we’ll wish him the best.”
Prior to joining the Rams, he made his Super Bowl debut with the New England Patriots, where he ran for at least 900 yards in each of his first two seasons.
Possible reasons for the early exit
The running back had won two Super Bowls going into his sixth NFL season. Yet he met an abrupt halt at such a young age while he and his present team were in complete agreement. What motivated him to make such a choice? Well, it’s not really clear at this point, even though Sean thought the choice was a “bummer”.
The front office graciously accepted his choice, and the coach promised to keep in touch with the athlete. Additionally, he made hints that Zach Evans, Akers, and Kyren Williams would be joined by another seasoned running back in order to improve their receiving space.
“It’s a bummer, but his body is feeling like it’s talking to him, and I have nothing but respect and appreciation for the competitor that he is,” he said. “I love Sony and we’ll continue to stay in touch, but we’ll look to add somebody in that running back room.”
The off-season has shocked fans with one unexpected announcement after another, and some of them, like the Rams running backs’ retirement, remain a mystery. Stick with us to get the following updates on his decision.
