Chelsea have won only one in their opening five Premier League games of the season, leaving them languishing in 14th place on the table despite spending over £400 million on new signings this summer. While it’s too early to tell whether the Blues will have a bad season, the early-season struggles are not making the fans happy.
Most of their struggles can be attributed to injuries to several first-team players, including three new signings. Chelsea splashed big money on Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, and Christopher Nkunku, who have failed to impress in their first few games for the club and are injured.
How much has Chelsea spent on transfers this season?
For the third transfer window running, Chelsea have been the heaviest spender in the Premier League under the new ownership of Todd Boehly. After their disappointing campaign last season, the Blues have spent heavily on new signings, almost changing their squad entirely to rebuild the squad to challenge for titles.
While Chelsea managed to clear their squad of unwanted players such as Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, Matteo Kovacic, N’Golo Kante, Christian Pulisic, and Kalidou Koulibaly, they’ve spent heavily on new players to replace them, taking their summer spending to over £400 million.
Chelsea broke the British transfer record for Moises Caicedo when they brought the Ecuadorian midfielder to Stamford Bridge from Brighton in a deal worth €116 million and an additional €62 million on Romeo Lavia to bring the former Manchester City player from Southampton. The Blues also signed Christopher Nkunku, Cole Palmer, Axel Disasi, and Nicolas Jackson for a combined €189 million. The club also splashed some money on minor signings like Lesley Ugochukwu, Robert Sanchez, Deivid Washington, Angelo, and Djordje Petrovic.
Chelsea injury list
Chelsea spent a lot of money on new signings this summer but have been left in a difficult situation very early this season. The Blues lie 14th on the Premier League table after picking up just one win from five games, but that’s not the only reason for their fans to worry.
Chelsea have a growing injury list that includes new signings like Moises Caicedo, Christopher Nkunku, and Romeo Lavia. The latter has yet to play for his new club and was in line to play last weekend until he injured himself in training on Friday. “We are really disappointed because he was training well last week in the international break. He twisted in ankle, and now we are waiting for Monday for the assessment from the doctor,” Pochettino said.
