Why is Broncos DE Randy Gregory being released? Examining the reason

After embracing the embarrassment of a 1-3 mark this season, the Denver Broncos are trying to gear up themselves by making a small adjustment to their roster, and Randy Gregory became a victim of the squad restructure. The pass rusher played only six games in the 2022 season due a knee injury and a suspension.

Gregory vowed this offseason to be more productive, albeit he couldn’t live up to the lofty expectation. Even in the Broncos 20-70 loss to the Miami Dolphins, the veteran couldn’t sack Tua Tagovailoa for once, and hence, Denver has made up their mind to say him bye before their bye week.

Randy Gregory release reason: explained

The Broncos team dropped their Wednesday bomb by offering their decision to release Gregory. Denver earlier snatched away the starting job from the veteran by giving the spot to second-year star Nik Bonitto.

While talking about the sudden move on Wednesday, the team’s head coach Sean Payton said that the decision was initiated to let the young star’s develop their potential on the field. While Payton didn’t devalue Randy’s performance, he said other players are doing notably well to take over his position.

“We just felt like these other guys were playing better. It happens in this league. Shoot, we want the best players possible. There’s was a combination of things, but yeah, those other guys stepped up and are playing better.”

The Broncos also tried to trade the RB in recent days, albeit they failed to find any potential replacement for him. The decision to release him came after a one year since he signed a five-year, $70 million contract, having a fully guaranteed $14 million base salary this season and another $5 million next season.

Potential landing spot for the DE

Randy holds a heavy deal in his bag and hence, any franchise that will bait to trade for him would have to pay the remainder of his 2023 salary along with his contract for the next three seasons. However, his experience and expertise will surely make him a valuable addition to any team.

The former second-round draft pick may secure a new deal with the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs as their defense seemingly needs to be bolstered. Though they drafted young star Felix Anudike-Uzomah. The ex-Broncos star’s presence in the squad would give the team a deep boost.

The Baltimore Ravens are one of those teams who have completely fallen prey to injuries this season. Though they have Jadeveon Clowney and Kyle Van Noy in the absence of David Ojab, Odafe Oweh, and Tyus Bowser’s injury, Gregory’s presence would also be significant for them.

Heading to a 2-2 mark, the Los Angeles Rams are playing incredibly on the offensive side of the ball, but their defense needs an update that the 30-year-old may give. Besides the Rams, the Detroit Lions can also eye for the former Denver star to assist their young edge rusher, Aidan Hutchinson.
