MMA has a unique rule set and there are regional differences in it. Nonetheless, certain rules are universal, especially those that deal with disqualification. UFC debutant Igor Servino’s DQ loss is now the talk of the town for something that-like.
Many notable fighters in the UFC have had wins and losses via DQ. Jon Jones’ sole loss was via it and Aljamain Sterling’s title win was via it. However, Servino’s DQ loss will have everlasting consequences as evidenced by UFC CEO Dana White’s thoughts after the incident.
Why is Igor Severino getting cut from UFC?
Igor Severino, a Brazilian flyweight, was an undefeated professional making his debut in the UFC against fellow undefeated Brazilian, Andre Lima also making his debut with the promotion at UFC Vegas 89.
Severino and Lima fought in the second match of the Fight Night at the UFC Apex. After a close first round which 2 judges scored in favor of Lima, the second round saw Lima using his grappling techniques to full effect before the fight was stopped as Lima alleged Severio bit him in the arm.
The officials and referees checked the allegations on the video replay and found out that Severio was guilty. Referee Chris Tognoni waived the fight off, declaring Lima as the winner via DQ.
UFC CEO Dana White spoke with Yahoo Sports journalist Kevin Iole and confirmed that the promotion is cutting Severino from their roster of fighters. White also revealed that Lima will be getting a bonus as well.
