LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels earlier decided to showcase his caliber at his own pro day rather than at the combine. The quarterback is touted as the potential No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. He found himself at the center of attention as the Washington Commanders hosted a group visit for four top quarterback prospects, including him, which the signal-caller found unsettling.
This decision was perceived by many, including Daniels’ agent Ron Butler, as a missed opportunity to maximize their engagement with each prospect. Pro Football Talk slammed the Commanders for bringing in four top QB prospects for a group visit. Butler responded on social media, replying to the PFT post with a “thinking face” emoji.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter’s remarks also hinted at discord between Daniels’ camp and the Commanders.
“It didn’t seem to go over too well with the agent for Jayden Daniels, Ron Butler, who sounded off on social media last night that he didn’t seem particularly pleased with the process,” Schefter said on “Get Up” via CBS Sports.
“I think Jayden Daniels thought it would be a visit with just him meeting with the Commanders. Many people think that Jayden Daniels will wind up being the No. 2 overall pick. But the Commanders essentially opened up the process,” Schefter added.
Why did the Commanders host three other QBs with Jayden Daniels?
The Commanders recently hosted top prospects Jayden Daniels along with Drake Maye, J.J. McCarthy, and Michael Penix Jr. This move raised eyebrows across the NFL community, prompting speculation about the team’s intentions leading up to the draft.
Commanders general manager Adam Peters shed some light on the decision while highlighting the opportunity to evaluate the quarterbacks in a group setting.
“What’s cool is we got to see them all together in a group setting. They all got a lot of time individually with coaches and with us. They were staggered coming in, too. It was a great blend of that and working everyone together in a fun environment,” Peters said.
Despite the speculation swirling around Daniels as a potential frontrunner for the Commanders’ second overall pick, the team has remained tight-lipped about their draft plans. The decision-making process for an NFL franchise is complex, especially when it comes to selecting a quarterback who could potentially shape the team’s future.
The presence of multiple quarterback prospects at the team facility so close to the draft suggests that the commanders are keeping their options open. Do you think that they should draft Daniels? Tell us in the comments section.
