After hanging up his cleats in 2016, the former NFL safety Sergio Brown caught the attention of the football community one month ago as heart-breaking news arose regarding his family. Everyone raised their concern and was eagerly waiting to see further developments in the case.
In a shocking turn of events, the once-celebrated athlete, known for his prowess after kicking off his NFL career with the New England Patriots, now finds himself at the center of the somber and mysterious investigation.
Why is Sergio Brown in detention?
Almost one month ago, Sergio Brown’s mother was found dead and the former player himself was out of reach. Since then, authorities have been searching for him, and recently as late as last week, it was reported he was seen in a video partying in Mexico.
Meanwhile, the former NFL defensive back also made social media appearances, tagging ESPN and claiming that the news of his mother’s passing was fake. He further asserted that the FBI broke into his home and twice kidnapped him, but that he was not informed of his mother’s passing since he assumed she was on vacation.
“Fake news. Fake news. Fake news. It has to be the FBI that came into my house on Bob Marley’s death day with the 511 haze and gas unwarranted. They kidnapped me twice from home – the Maywood Police Department. It had to be the FBI or the Maywood police.”
The 35-year-old’s behavior seemed extremely suspicious, and an Illinois arrest warrant was filed consequently. On Tuesday, he was arrested by the law enforcement authority and brought into custody after attempting to re-enter the United States into California from Mexico. Brown was accused of first-degree murder. According to reports, the maximum sentence is life in jail without the chance of release.
What happened to Sergio Brown’s mother?
Sergio Brown and his mother were reported missing from Illinois by their family members when they were on their way to join a family occasion. On 16 September, Police in Maywood, Illinois discovered his mother near a creek behind her house in Maywood.
To determine the true cause of Mrs. Brown’s passing, the body was collected. The 73-year-old’s death report revealed that she had multiple assault injuries. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office later declared her death to be a murder.
According to CNN, Brown’s family urged police to move the inquiry along in a statement released by lawyer Christian Conway last month.
“We implore law enforcement agencies, particularly the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, to work diligently and thoroughly in pursuit of truth and accountability for Myrtle Jean Simmons-Brown. No family should bear the weight of uncertainty regarding the circumstances of their loved one’s passing”, the family said.
The family, though, might have ever accused Brown of being involved in the murder of his mother. On November 13, a court proceeding is scheduled. Whether the former Colts player is actually involved in the tragic event will be revealed in later publications. Till then, stay tuned.
