Ian Garry maintained his undefeated record at UFC 298, securing a split decision victory against veteran welterweight Geoff Neal. Initially scheduled to face off at UFC 292, the bout was postponed due to Neal’s injury, leading to Neil Magny stepping in as a replacement.
Garry aims to fight for the UFC welterweight title against Leo Edwards and is also eager to face three-time title challenger Colby Covington. Covington, along with Sean Strickland, has been a vocal critic of Ian Garry regarding controversies in his personal life.
Is Ian Garry going to face off against Colby Covington?
Ian Garry has already made his intentions clear on who he wants to fight next after UFC 298 and it is none other than Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington. “I’m going to go out there and beat Colby Covington,” Covington said of his prediction for a potential fight with Covington. “He’s fought for three world titles and he’s lost all three. He’s not as good as people think he is,” Garry went on to thrash Covington.
“I’ll match him pace for pace on cardio, I’ll match him for output. He doesn’t possess anywhere near the power Geoff Neal does. He has great wrestling. Put me on my back, I’m training with Demian Maia. See what happens if you put me on my back. I’ll choke him unconscious,” Garry went on to state that he is superior in all aspects of MMA than Colby Covington.
“I promise you. I will end that fight, I’ll finish that fight, and I’ll rid the UFC of Colby Covington once and for all,” Garry concluded with a stern warning for Covington. Garry’s callout did not stop at the post-fight press conference. “I’m gonna hunt you down,” Garry again sent a stern warning to Covington, this time via his Instagram story.
Garry was ranked 10th before the win over Neal and he will likely take the number 7 spot presently occupied by Stephen Thompson, who lost to Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 296. Covington is ranked 5 and has already called out Thompson for a fight. However, considering Garry’s star power and Covington’s declining performance inside the octagon, the UFC might book Garry versus Covington next.
Ian Garry spotted crying backstage at UFC 298
Ian Garry and his wife Layla Anna-Lee came under constant scrutiny in recent times on social media due to Garry being 14 years younger than his 40-year-old wife. Nonetheless, the couple have stayed strong throughout the social media hate from fans and fighters alike, particularly from Sean Strickland and Colby Covington.
Anna-Lee shared an emotional incident backstage from before the fight with Geoff Neal on Instagram that showed the bond Garry had with his team and his family. In the video, Garry, his wife, and his team stood in circles and hugged as they prayed. “The prayer before the fight. Thank you for the blessings,” Anna-Lee captioned the post.
Nonetheless, social media critics found ways to demean the beautiful picture as they used the video to spread a negative image of Anna-Lee, something Strickland and Covington have already been doing.
Garry has been training at Chute Box in Brazil and considers them like family and the bond was evident in the video. The Irishman began training at Chute Box after he was kicked out of Team Renegade in Birmingham.
