Edge, one of WWE’s most creative superstars, finally ended his run on August 18 at SmackDown, held in his hometown of Toronto. After several weeks of rumors circulating that The Hall of Famer would retire from the wrestling business, he denied those rumors in a video, saying that his contract with WWE expires after August 18. Last week’s SmackDown was the final show of his current run in WWE.
However, recently, rumors have circulated that the R-rated Superstar is going to get into a contract with WWE rival promotion AEW, and WWE allegedly knows it.
WWE internally believes AEW to be the next destination for Edge
WWE Hall of Famer Edge fought the last match on his current WWE contract on a recent episode of SmackDown in Toronto with a victory over Sheamus. Since then, there have been rumors about what the R-rated superstar will do.
Edge previously announced in a video on Twitter that he has a contract extension offer from WWE as his contract expires at the end of this month.
When WWE reportedly declined a contract offer that Edge denied in that tweeted video, it added fuel to the fire of rumors that Edge is probably headed to AEW. Recently, Dave Meltzer wrote in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that those in WWE believe The Hall of Famer is likely on his way to AEW.
“Those in WWE have noted that they expect Edge to go to AEW”, wrote Dave in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
Edge debunked the WWE contract dispute theory last month
A few days ago, WWE Hall of Famer Edge took to Twitter to address rumors about his in-ring future. August 18’s episode of WWE SmackDown celebrated the Rated-R Superstar’s 25th anniversary and ended by teasing his retirement following a match with his buddy Sheamus.
Many sources claimed that WWE had declined what sounded like some pretty lofty demands by Edge, resulting in him becoming a free agent and likely signing with AEW once his contract ends at the end of September.
While the Hall of Famer doesn’t mention the rival company in the video, he did at least try to clear things up a little.
“I woke up to a bunch of voicemails, texts, and everything from actual friends and family wondering what’s going on and concerned and blah, blah, blah so I just figured I’d better address it,” said Edge.
“Nothing is going on. There are no hard feelings between me and WWE. I love WWE. It’s my dream gig. It’s all I ever wanted to do. I didn’t come at them with some crazy contract or anything. They didn’t deny me, I have a contract extension sitting in my inbox. I just don’t know what to do. The first time I had to retire it was forced, and this time, the choice is in my lap and it’s a lot harder. WWE gave me that night Friday night in Toronto and it was the best night of my career. A lot of people will say you should retire at WrestleMania or this or that but it’s not their career,” he further added.
There is still no official report on his move to AEW, but fans are hoping that the R-rated superstar doesn’t join the AEW roster.
